Presenting the First Annual Care Hero Awards!

On Monday, June 26th, Councilmember Hanif, Assemblymember Jo Anne Simon, and Commissioner Vilda Vera Mayua joined us and Care Forward in hosting the first annual Care Hero Awards in Park Slope, Brooklyn. We honored the critical care and labor of domestic workers and the businesses, elected officials, faith leaders, and community-based organizations committed to transforming the care economy and fighting for worker justice in District 39.  In addition to domestic workers, Councilmember Hanif, Assemblymember Simon, and Commissioner Mayua, we honored the following community partners:

  • Susan Fox, Park Slope Parents

  • Pastor Cheri Lroon, Old First Reformed Church

  • Marlene Michalek and Nicole Gaudier-Alemany, Park Slope Library

  • Norman Cohen, Kane Street Synagogue

  • Soni, Camp Friendship

  • John Leighton, Carroll Gardens Library

  • Amanda Garcia-Harris, Emma’s Torch

  • Kim Maier, Old Stone House

  • Zhara Baksh, Hand in Hand

Care Forward is a Brooklyn-based standards-raising initiative for care workers and employers. There are 200,000 care workers living and working in our City, most of whom are women. 1 in 8 are women of color; for immigrant women in Brooklyn, it’s 1 in 5. Care work in our City is overwhelmingly done by women, women of color, or immigrants making Care Forward all the more critical. Since its launch in September 2021, 75% of nannies who participated in Care Forward received access to more benefits, overtime, and other resources.
