About the Carroll Gardens Association:
The Carroll Gardens Association (CGA) is an affordable housing and economic development grassroots organization that has been working in Brooklyn since 1971. We organize with tenants and domestic workers to advocate for permanently affordable housing, cooperative economics, and domestic worker rights.
Tenant Organizer Position
About the Tenant Organizer Position:
We seek to hire a dynamic full-time (40 hours/week) tenant organizer that will focus on two areas: the development of the CGA Resident Council and coordination of the Southwest Brooklyn Tenant Union. The CGA Resident Council will provide political education, skills-building, and leadership development opportunities to CGA tenants (CGA housing is a scattered-site development with 5 clusters comprising the 150 units in Red Hook, Carroll Gardens, and the Columbia Waterfront). The Southwest Brooklyn Tenant Union, a project of CGA, is a member-led organization that supports individual members facing displacement while collectively organizing towards broader policy that ensures the right to safe and quality housing.
Responsibilities
Support SWBTU members to lead monthly meetings, develop base building goals, and identify campaigns.
Conduct and lead regular neighborhood outreach in line with base building goals.
Conduct leadership development to build the capacity of CGA residents and SWBTU members.
Offer weekly office hours answering residents’ housing questions and needs including filing for DRIE/SCRIE, housing applications, and more.
Identify and recruit CGA tenant leaders to participate in the Resident Council.
Plan and co-facilitate CGA site meetings with residents and tenant leaders.
Communicate between CGA tenants and Property Management as needed to address repair issues, quality of life issues, recertifications, and lease renewals.
Coordinate participation of CGA tenants and SWBTU members in city, state, and federal housing campaigns.
Represent CGA and participate in citywide, statewide, and national housing justice coalitions.
Assist in writing reports to current housing funders and assist with grant development.
Qualifications:
We’re seeking candidates who excel in relationship‐building, have strong verbal and written communications skills, project management skills, with a strong commitment to CGA's mission and movement building.
At least one year of experience with outreach, base-building, member leadership development, organizing campaigns, and project management, with an emphasis on tenant organizing, racial justice, and immigrant rights.
Demonstrated ability to develop the leadership of members
Ability to design, lead, run workshops, and trainings for members
Experience with door-knocking and/or phone banking
Demonstrated commitment and passion for social justice and understanding of community organizing approach to social change
Strong writing, communication, and group work skills
Bi-lingual Spanish/English fluency is strongly preferred
Interest in growing a career with CGA
