Remembering Salvatore “Buddy” Scotto 1928 - 2020

Earlier this week, we said good-bye to our beloved Founder, Board Member, and friend. Salvatore "Buddy" Scotto peacefully passed away on Sept. 11, 2020 at the age of 91. Buddy Scotto was a larger-than-life personality in the Southwest Brooklyn Community, and unofficially called "The Mayor of Carroll Gardens."

A community activist, Buddy dedicated his life to community service, affordable housing, and environmental causes.

The name "Carroll Gardens" could be attributed to Buddy Scotto because of the leafy streets in the neighborhood. Buddy founded numerous nonprofits, including the Carroll Gardens Association, Inc., an affordable housing organization and neighborhood preservation corporation founded in 1971.  A community activist, Buddy Scotto dedicated his life to community service, affordable housing, and environmental causes. Buddy talked about the clean-up of the Gowanus  Canal long before it was popular. He secured funding  for the Gowanus sewer plant back  in the Rockefeller era. Let us pause and pay tribute to this great man.”
