Provides information about Court procedures, landlord/tenant rules and regulations, enforcement of housing code violations, referrals for free legal help, and referrals to community organizations that help with housing problems.

The TPU preserves affordable housing by detecting and curtailing patterns and practices of landlord fraud and harassment through audits, investigations, and impactful legal actions. The TPU also encourages compliance by informing tenants and owners of their rights and responsibilities under the rent regulation laws.

Tenants’ rights telephone hotline: The hotline is free and open to any tenant living in New York City. Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:30 – 8:00pm. Fridays from 1:30pm to 5pm.
They can give brief answers to your rights as a tenant, and explain your options for dealing with a housing situation. Common questions relate to:
getting repairs from negligent landlords
getting adequate heat in the winter months
dealing with the threat of eviction
questions about leases and lease renewals
legal rent increases for rent-regulated apartments
