#FreetheFamiles Vigil

On Sunday September 27, 2020 CGA members joined Hand in Hand and thousands of voices across the country to #FreeTheFamiles vigil, a nationwide action organized by Families Belong Together.

Last week, Dawn Wooten, a former nurse at ICE's Irwin County Detention Center in Georgia revealed that ICE surgically removed an “inordinate” number of women’s wombs against their will. The cruelty and inhumane treatment against refugees and immigrants by the government needs to stop.

As we continue to mourn the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a champion of women’s rights, we are outraged that the Louisville police officers who shot and killed Breonna Taylor in her home were not charged. We are also horrified that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has forcibly sterilized dozens of immigrant women in detention. Black women and immigrant women of color have no justice. Women of color continue to live under permanent fear of being killed, abused or separated from their children and families. Women of color aren’t safe in the United States.

White Supremacy is built on the sexual and violent abuse of women’s bodies. The murder  and forced sterilization of Black women, Native women, Mexican and Puerto Rican women,  incarcerated women, poor women and women with disabilities are part of the ugly history of systemic oppression in the United States. Enough is enough! We must end the systems that continue to kill our Black and immigrant women of color.

We are committed to fighting and advocating with Black and brown communities so all women have the control of their bodies and lives. We stand in solidarity to demand justice for women seeking asylum and for Breonna Taylor.
