DOMINGO COMMS PRESENTS ARTIST ELLIE d'EUSTACHIO’S DEBUT EXHIBITION ‘MADE BY ELLIE’ AT THE GOWANUS DREDGERS BOATHOUSE
Domingo Comms is proud to present artist Ellie d’Eustachio’s debut solo exhibition ‘Made by Ellie’ at the Gowanus Dredgers Boathouse from October 24 to November 29, 2020.
October 12, 2020, New York — Today Domingo Comms announces Artist Ellie d’Eustachio’s first solo presentation of her knit artworks, which include the ‘Eat the Monsters’ street art series and the backdrop to New York Times and Washington Post reviewed performance ‘Quince’, at the Gowanus Dredgers Boathouse. The exhibition opens for press previews on October 20th and to the public on Saturday, October 24th with an outdoor, socially-distanced reception at the Boathouse.
Artist Ellie d’Eustachio’s playful knit work takes folk art and twists it towards a modern political bent. This collection explores the year 2020 both through confrontation and escapism. Some works explore fighting the Trump administration, other pieces are a colorful escape from the solitary and exhausting walls imposed by the pandemic, living in a world hit hard by global warming, the patriarchy, and racial violence.
The protest series “Eat the Monsters” has garnered widespread attention, hanging on scaffolding around Brooklyn and Manhattan featuring fun, colorful creatures having the president for lunch. Ellie’s unique creatures eating the true monster are attention grabbing show pieces that aim to bring light and humor to a dark time in history while also enchanting children and making hard topics easier to broach. “Politics and knitting are longtime friends and I’m honored to bring street art into that mix in Brooklyn,” says d’Eustachio on her upcoming show, “I hope this collection will help push us through hard times with fantasy and humor.”
An exciting and unique component to the exhibition and the October 24th outdoor reception will be the unveiling of an 8-foot knit pink neon alligator victoriously devouring Donald Trump, overlooking the Gowanus Canal.
The exhibit includes work that takes the viewer to other worlds and brings fantasy to 2020 New York. One such piece is a 6 foot wall of knit flowers used as a photo backdrop for the New York Times and Washington Post reviewed show ‘Quince’ about a queer, Chicana’s quinceañera.
Throughout the month of November, Domingo Comms will present programming at the boathouse, featuring d'Eustachio’s exhibition as a backdrop and inspiration for discussions around street art culture, performance, and knitting as an artform. The first event will be taking place on October 30th with ‘Quince’ Writer, Camilo Quiroz-Vazquez and Director, Ellpetha Tsivicos in celebration of Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos).
The gallery show is sure to inspire and bring Made By Ellie monsters to life with the exciting option to invite some of them into your own living rooms. “This is the first time the Brooklyn community will have the chance to take home part of Ellie’s series which made such an impactful, colorful statement in our streets.” says Veronica Petty, founder of Domingo Comms, who is producing the exhibition. “It’s the opportunity to own a piece of local history.”
All works in the exhibition will be available to purchase through Domingo Comms. ‘Eat the Monsters’ limited prints in editions of 10 will be sold at the boathouse in addition to more knit pieces on canvas in a variety of sizes.
