A Historic Week for Care!
This week CGA members joined the Care Can’t Wait Summit, a gathering of hundreds of care workers, activists, union members, and leaders from across the care economy coming together to address the care crisis. Watching the impacts of grassroots work become reflected legislatively, as organizations like Care Forward continue to do the necessary work on the ground, is truly cause for celebration, Care Forward is a Brooklyn-based standards-raising initiative for care workers and employers. Since its launch in September 2021, 75% of nannies who participated in Care Forward received access to more benefits, overtime, and other resources. Care Forward initiatives include a series of training modules where people are given vital tools to help navigate their rights and safety in the work environment.
There are 200,000 care workers living and working in our City, most of whom are women. 1 in 8 are women of color; for immigrant women in Brooklyn, it’s 1 in 5. Care work in our City is overwhelmingly done by women, women of color, or immigrants making Care Forward all the more critical.
